6 Taurus Zodiac and Birth Flowers (and How to Grow Each One)

Find the flower tied to your Taurus birthday, or to someone else’s, then check the growing spot and pet risks before you plant or give it.

The short answer: Taurus runs from April 20 to May 20. Interflora and 1-800-Flowers pair Taurus with the poppy, while ProFlowers and Teleflora choose the lily. April birthdays bring daisy and sweet pea; May brings lily of the valley. Birth-month flowers follow a separate list from zodiac flowers. No body sets a single Taurus flower; florists and astrology writers name them.

The seed packet says sweet pea. The birthday card says Taurus. Before you plant or give either flower, you want to know whether they belong together, and whether a cat can safely be near them.

Both are fair questions. Flower guides disagree about the zodiac pick. Birth-month lists answer a different question.

The growing conditions are easier to pin down. Start with the birthday flowers, then work toward the competing Taurus picks.

6Sweet Pea, April’s Fragrant Birth Flower

6 of 6

The Old Farmer’s Almanac lists sweet pea alongside daisy for April. If a Taurus birthday falls in April, sweet peas offer fragrant flowers for cutting.

Give sweet peas full sun and a support to climb. Oregon State University Extension advises sowing early in spring. UC Marin Master Gardeners recommends keeping the roots cool.

Check with your local extension service for sowing dates. Keep the vines away from pets: the ASPCA lists sweet pea as toxic to cats and dogs.

Best for: An April-born Taurus who wants fragrant flowers to cut and has a pet-free growing spot.

5Daisy, an April Birth Flower

5 of 6

A daisy on an April birthday card doesn’t tell you which daisy to plant. For a border, choose Shasta daisy. The Missouri Botanical Garden lists full sun, well-drained soil and Zones 5 through 9. It blooms from July through September.

That July bloom is worth noticing. The Old Farmer’s Almanac calls daisy an April birth flower, but Shasta daisies won’t bloom for an April birthday.

For a bouquet going into a home with pets, check the florist’s label. The ASPCA lists Gerbera daisy as non-toxic to cats and dogs. It lists chrysanthemum, also called daisy, as toxic.

Best for: A sunny, low-maintenance border, or an April bouquet of identified Gerbera daisies for a home with pets.

4Lily of the Valley for a May Birthday

That shaded patch where sun-loving flowers fail has a May birthday connection. The Old Farmer’s Almanac lists lily of the valley as a May birth flower.

A Missouri Botanical Garden plant chart places it in part shade to shade. It’s hardy in Zone 3 and blooms from May through June.

For planting, North Carolina State Extension’s *Convallaria majalis* page describes divisions called pips. Check your local extension service for planting time.

First, look at who uses that shaded space. The ASPCA lists lily of the valley as toxic to cats and dogs.

Best for: A shaded groundcover gift for a May-born Taurus in a home without pets.

3Rose, the Venus-Linked Taurus Flower

Is a rose really a Taurus flower? BloomBar includes it among its Taurus picks, and Astrology.com describes Taurus as Venus-ruled.

English Heritage traces the rose’s association with Venus and Aphrodite. That gives the Taurus flower meaning here: love and beauty.

For a shrub rose you’ll grow, University of Illinois Extension recommends full sun, good air flow and well-drained soil. Its rose-care guidance gives about 1 inch of water per week as a summer rule. Water the soil, rather than splashing the leaves.

Roses are generally non-toxic to cats and dogs, according to the ASPCA, but their thorns are a hazard. Check the exact plant in the ASPCA’s toxic and non-toxic plant database before buying.

Best for: A beginner’s sunny garden gift when you want a Venus connection and have checked the plant for pets.

2Poppy, a Taurus Zodiac Flower Pick

Interflora names the poppy as its Taurus pick, linking it to strength and elegance. The National Garden Bureau also lists poppy for Taurus.

For corn poppy, *Papaver rhoeas*, North Carolina State Extension calls for full sun and well-drained soil. It’s an annual. Ask your local extension service when to sow it where you live.

There’s a firm limit if animals roam the bed: the ASPCA lists poppy as toxic to cats and dogs.

Best for: A bold garden bed in full sun, away from cats and dogs.

1Lily, the Florists’ Taurus Flower Pick

ProFlowers names the lily as its Taurus pick. Teleflora and FTD name it too. Interflora’s poppy is a different guide’s answer.

To grow a true lily, look for *Lilium* on the label. Clemson Extension advises planting bulbs in fall or spring.

Cover most with 4 to 6 inches of soil. The Missouri Botanical Garden describes the ideal position as tops in sun, roots in shade. Keep the soil well drained.

The ASPCA says Easter lily, a *Lilium*, is highly toxic to cats, with kidney failure a risk.

Don’t bring a lily bouquet into a home with cats. Ask about pets before ordering flowers for someone else.

Best for: A cut bouquet in a cat-free home, after checking the exact flowers for any other pets.

The bottom line

The right flower depends on the question you’re asking. Zodiac guides split between poppy and lily; April and May birth flowers follow the calendar.

Check the birthday month, read the plant label, match its growing spot and ask about pets before the bouquet leaves the shop.
