21 Best Train Trips for Seniors in the USA

The best train trips for seniors in the USA include a canyon day ride and a Rockies crossing; compare the station, fare, and sleeper before booking.

By Margaret Hale, Travel Editor
Updated · 16 min read

The short answer: The California Zephyr is the best long-distance pick: its Chicago-to-Bay Area run takes about 52 hours and crosses the Rockies and Sierra Nevada. The Coast Starlight and Empire Builder are strong alternatives. For a single day, choose the Grand Canyon Railway or Verde Canyon Railroad. Amtrak gives riders 65 and older 10% off most fares.

The suitcase is packed. Your car keys are still on the hook, and you’d like them to stay there. You want to watch a place change outside the window, then arrive with enough energy to enjoy it.

A train makes that possible, but the name on the ticket matters. Some rides take an afternoon; others take several nights. Some end where you started. Others leave you planning a hotel, a ride from the station, and a way home. Pick the shape of the trip first.

21Amtrak Train From Chicago to Boston

21 of 21

If Boston is the destination, pay attention to the section printed on your ticket. The Lake Shore Limited is an overnight train with separate Boston and New York sections. Its Boston section runs from Chicago to Boston, according to the Lake Shore Limited route overview.

A search result showing the train’s name alone doesn’t tell you where your own car is headed. Enter Boston as the destination and check the itinerary before paying.

This ride replaces a travel day; it won’t bring you back to Chicago. Decide how you want to spend the night aboard, then compare the full itinerary with the fare on your date.

20Amtrak Texas Eagle Train From Chicago

20 of 21

Amtrak’s Texas Eagle timetable lists daily service from Chicago to San Antonio. Along the way, its Texas stops include Dallas, Fort Worth, and Austin, according to Amtrak’s Texas fact sheet. You have several possible endings rather than a single all-or-nothing trip.

Start with the city you actually want to see. If that’s Austin, don’t let the train’s San Antonio endpoint make the plan feel bigger than it needs to be. If San Antonio is the draw, look at the complete trip and decide whether the time aboard is part of the pleasure.

This is an overnight journey. Compare coach with a private room before deciding a displayed fare is the whole story. The train removes the long drive. It doesn’t remove the need to choose where you’ll sleep and where you’ll get off.

19Amtrak Southwest Chief Train From Chicago

19 of 21

There’s a useful fork in this route. You could stay aboard the Southwest Chief from Chicago to Los Angeles. Or you could use the connection Amtrak lists at Williams, Arizona, for the Grand Canyon Railway.

Those are different vacations. One keeps the train ride itself at the center. The other uses a long-distance train to reach a separate canyon excursion.

If the Grand Canyon is your reason for going, check the connection as part of the whole itinerary. Don’t treat the words “Grand Canyon” on a route page as proof that the Chief pulls up at the rim.

If Los Angeles is the goal, leave the canyon connection out and focus on the through ticket. A route with an appealing detour is still best booked around the place you mean to reach.

18City of New Orleans Overnight Train

18 of 21

Chicago, Memphis, New Orleans: the City of New Orleans timetable lays out a straightforward overnight trip. If you’ve been putting off New Orleans because the drive feels like too much, this route gives you a clear alternative.

The choice is whether to ride through or break the journey at Memphis. A stop changes the booking, the lodging, and the amount of time you spend on a train at once. Make that decision before comparing fares.

Picture the morning after your train night. Do you want to arrive and begin sightseeing, or would you rather leave the first part of the day open? Build the arrival day around the answer. Your plans will feel different after a night aboard than they did when you made them at home.

17Sunset Limited Southwest Desert Route

17 of 21

The desert is a reason to book the Sunset Limited. Its schedule is also a reason to slow down before booking anything around it.

This New Orleans to Los Angeles route covers 1,997 miles, according to the Surface Transportation Board. It runs three times a week, rather than daily. Miss your intended departure, and there isn’t another one the next morning.

Choose the train date first. Then arrange the nights before and after it. If a hotel stay or event is immovable, work backward from that commitment.

Check the timetable before buying the rest. The long stretch of track is the attraction here, so give the ride a place in your plans rather than treating it like a transfer.

16Auto Train From Lorton to Sanford

16 of 21

Want your own car in Florida without driving it all the way there? Amtrak’s Auto Train carries passengers and their vehicles nonstop between Lorton, Virginia, near Washington, DC, and Sanford, Florida, near Orlando.

Notice those station names. This isn’t a train from a downtown DC platform to an Orlando station. You have to reach Lorton with the vehicle you’re bringing, then leave Sanford in it. The car remains available for the rest of your trip while the long haul happens by rail.

Amtrak’s published schedule lists a 4:00 p.m. departure and an 8:59 a.m. arrival the next day. Check the schedule for your date before arranging either end. Then compare the passenger fare and vehicle charge as one trip, rather than judging the passenger ticket alone.

15Vermonter Train Trip Through New England

15 of 21

Photo by Stephen Mease on Unsplash

The Vermonter runs daily between Washington, DC, and St. Albans, Vermont, Amtrak says. You don’t have to ride its entire length to make Vermont the point of the trip.

Business Class has seat selection, leather seats with footrests, and complimentary nonalcoholic drinks. Weigh those against the fare. If choosing your seat matters more than the drink, you know what part of the upgrade you’re paying for.

Select the Vermont stop that fits your stay. Then look at the arrival time and the ride from the station to your lodging. A pleasant seat matters. So does knowing where you’ll go when you step off.

14Pacific Surfliner Scenic Train Trip

14 of 21

For scenic train trips in the United States that don’t require sleeping aboard, start with the Pacific Surfliner. It serves 29 stations between San Luis Obispo and San Diego. Its coastal views include stretches near Ventura and Grover Beach, according to the operator’s FAQ.

That station list gives you room to choose. A ride between stops that suit your schedule beats a full-route trip you don’t want. Before paying, check whether the ocean-view stretch you pictured lies between the stations on your ticket.

The Pacific Surfliner senior offer gives riders 62 and older 15% off, above Amtrak’s national senior rate. Select the eligible discount during booking and compare the final fare.

If boarding or bags are a concern, settle those details while you’re choosing stations. Amtrak’s Station Accessibility page lists station services and lets you request staff assistance or station wheelchair use during booking. For wheelchair space, transfer seats, or an accessible bedroom, use Amtrak’s Accessible Travel Services reservation process.

13Grand Canyon Railway Williams Day Trip

13 of 21

This one gives the day a firm outline. The Grand Canyon Railway lists a 9:30 a.m. departure from Williams, Arizona. You get more than three hours at the South Rim, then return at 5:45 p.m. Check your date: the operator lists different times for November and December.

You get a train ride and time at the canyon without making the drive between Williams and the rim. You also return to the place you started. Plan your night in Williams or your onward travel with that return in mind.

For 2026, the railway lists adult Coach at about $90 and First Class at about $173. Compare the classes before paying extra. If the canyon itself is the prize, the hours you have there matter more than the label on the carriage.

12Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

12 of 21

The Durango and Silverton excursion runs over 45 miles of narrow-gauge track dating to 1882. Here, the railway is the adventure, rather than transportation to a distant hotel.

Look closely at the excursion you select. The operator lists seasonal steam and diesel choices, along with some train-and-motorcoach return options. A train in both directions makes for a different day from riding the rails one way and returning by road.

Read the whole itinerary. Where will you be when the ride ends?

If you need an ADA or special-needs booking, the railroad directs those reservations to 877-872-4607. Call before buying a standard ticket and describe the assistance you need. That gets you an answer tied to the excursion you’re considering, rather than a guess based on a photograph of the train.

11Verde Canyon Railroad Arizona Excursion

11 of 21

An indoor seat and an open-air viewing car come with the Verde Canyon Railroad ticket. Charcuterie is included, too, according to the railroad’s FAQ. You have a place to sit inside and another place to watch the scenery.

Use the indoor car as your base. Step into the open-air car for the views you came to see. That’s an appealing arrangement if you don’t want to commit to standing outside for the whole outing.

The railroad lists a 2026 adult fare of about $139 on most dates. Check its rate calendar for your day rather than carrying that number straight to checkout. If you’re comparing Arizona excursions, compare the prices for the dates you’d actually travel.

10Napa Valley Wine Train Experience

10 of 21

The Napa Valley Wine Train asks a different question from the long-distance routes: how much of your day do you want to spend aboard? Its experiences run from about two and a half hours to six hours, from meal trips to longer winery-focused outings.

Pick the experience before judging the price. A shorter ride and a full-day plan aren’t interchangeable merely because both have “Wine Train” in the name. Read what your ticket includes.

Price matters here. Time Out reported finding the six-hour Legacy Experience at about $614 per person in 2026. That’s a reference point, not a fare to expect on your date.

Pull up the operator’s current choices and decide whether you want a rail meal, a longer outing, or a different use for that vacation budget.

9Conway Scenic New England Train Trip

9 of 21

Photo by Neil Mewes on Unsplash

If a New England train trip needs to fit inside a vacation already planned, look at the Conway Scenic Railroad’s Mountaineer. Its Crawford Notch excursion takes about four to four and a half hours. The ride has its own place in the day without requiring an overnight train.

Coach adult tickets are listed at $75 in the regular season and $83 in high season. Dome seats reach up to $198. Decide whether the Dome view is the thing you’re buying, or whether the route itself is enough.

For a foliage-focused outing, this is a set excursion rather than a journey with hotels to arrange at both ends. Check the date and car class together. A tempting price for the wrong departure won’t put you in the seat you pictured.

8Mount Washington Cog Railway Ascent

8 of 21

A mountain train comes with a weather decision. On the Mount Washington Cog Railway, conditions determine whether a trip reaches its planned destination. If weather shortens the trip to Waumbek, the adult ticket is a flat $57 under its 2026 policy.

Read that policy before booking. You’ll know what a shortened trip means before you’re standing at the station hoping the sky clears.

Is a steam train the reason you’re going? Check the equipment schedule as carefully as the ticket date. The railway lists steam departures on set summer days, rather than on every ride. Book the train you mean to take, and leave room in your plans for the weather decision.

7Cumbres and Toltec Border Railway

7 of 21

Photo by Carol Highsmith's America on Unsplash

The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad runs across 64 miles of narrow-gauge track on the Colorado and New Mexico border, with views into Toltec Gorge. Crossing that landscape is the point of the day.

Before paying, read the exact excursion description. Find the starting place, the endpoint, and how the itinerary gets you back if those places differ. A railroad name tells you what you’ll see; it doesn’t settle where your car will be afterward.

Add the railroad’s 7% Historic Preservation Fee when comparing ticket totals. Then check the change terms for the excursion you chose. Do that arithmetic at home, before the view in the booking photograph has made the decision for you.

6Western Maryland Scenic Frostburg Flyer

6 of 21

The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad lists seasonal outings including the Frostburg Flyer and Allegheny Winter Express. Choose the excursion first. The name on the calendar determines the day you’re booking.

On the 2026 Frostburg Flyer, adult Coach is listed at $45, while Dome Class is $130. Other listed classes fall between those prices. Resist upgrading on reflex. Decide whether a higher viewing position or a different onboard setup matters to you before choosing a car.

If your aim is an Allegheny rail outing, this trip keeps the commitment to an excursion. Check the railroad’s class descriptions, then match the departure to your season. A winter excursion and a Frostburg Flyer ticket aren’t the same purchase.

5White Pass and Yukon Border Journey

5 of 21

The White Pass and Yukon Route belongs on this list for a trip based near Alaska, but its itinerary needs careful reading. The 2026 one-day Whitehorse to Skagway combo includes train and coach travel. Don’t buy it assuming “combo” means rail in both directions.

The operator scheduled that service from May 26 through September 12, 2026. Check the schedule for the year you travel before building another booking around it.

You’ll also see a Bennett to Whitehorse Chilkoot Hiker Service ticket listed from $126. That is a specific service, not a price for every White Pass excursion. Start with the route and direction you want, then price that ticket. The name draws you in; the endpoints tell you what you’re buying.

4Alaska Railroad Anchorage to Denali

4 of 21

Photo by Drew Farwell on Unsplash

The Denali Star serves Wasilla, Talkeetna, and Denali on its summer route. Before you look at seats, decide where you want to board and where you want to get off.

For 2026, the Alaska Railroad fare page lists one-way Adventure Class from Anchorage or Wasilla to Denali at about $205. Check the fare for your station pair and date. A price tied to those endpoints isn’t a quote for every Denali journey.

The railroad’s senior Half Fare Program covered an off-peak window from September 20, 2025, through May 10, 2026. Don’t assume it applies to a summer Denali Star ticket.

Choose your season first, then check the fare program for your travel dates. You want the ride you came for, not a discount on a different trip.

3Empire Builder Chicago to Glacier National Park

3 of 21

Glacier National Park sounds like a single station. It isn’t. The National Park Service’s train directions say the Empire Builder stops year-round at West Glacier, also called Belton, and Essex. East Glacier Park is a seasonal stop.

Settle that detail before buying a Chicago departure. Start with where you plan to stay and which station fits that plan. Then check whether your chosen stop is served on your travel date. Don’t pick East Glacier Park from an appealing map and sort out the season later.

This route turns a long train trip into a park visit without asking you to drive all the way there. You still need to arrange the last leg from platform to lodging or your park destination. A good journey ends at the right station.

2Coast Starlight Seattle to Los Angeles

2 of 21

On the Coast Starlight, the Sightseer Lounge is part of the appeal. Amtrak describes it as a place for panoramic West Coast views on the daily Seattle to Los Angeles run.

That changes the seat question. You have an onboard viewing space to visit as the landscape changes. The train is a long-distance journey, rather than a quick excursion that returns you to the same station.

Decide whether you want the complete Seattle to Los Angeles trip or a shorter portion. Then compare coach and private-room prices for the stretch you’ll ride. The lounge gives you somewhere to look out; your ticket choice determines how you spend the rest of the journey.

1California Zephyr, Best Train Trip for Seniors

1 of 21

Photo by Daphne Fecheyr on Unsplash

If you’re booking one grand American rail journey, choose the California Zephyr. It runs daily, according to Amtrak. Its timetable puts the Chicago to Emeryville trip at about 52 hours. Emeryville is the Bay Area endpoint on the timetable, not a station named San Francisco.

The route crosses the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada. That gives the trip its shape: a long ride through changing country, rather than a train chosen only because it connects two cities. It’s the pick when you want the journey itself to justify the time aboard.

Start by searching Chicago to Emeryville on your travel date. Compare coach, a roomette, and a bedroom using the final prices shown for that departure. There is no single fare to carry from someone else’s trip to yours.

Then plan your arrival from Emeryville to wherever you’re staying. Do that before booking the hotel. The train takes care of the long-distance travel; the final local ride remains yours to arrange.

The bottom line

The ride depends on what you want to do when the train stops. A day excursion brings you back to your starting point. A long-distance route trades driving for a night aboard and a little more planning at the far end.

The prepared version of you has picked the right station, checked the date, compared the seat or room, and worked out the last ride to the hotel. Which stretch of track would you gladly spend a day watching from the window?

Question 1 of 50 right so far

What should you check before paying for a Lake Shore Limited trip to Boston?

Questions people also ask

What is the most beautiful train ride in the USA?

For a long scenic journey, consider the Chicago-to-Bay Area route that crosses both the Rockies and Sierra Nevada. Kiplinger reports that Amtrak has called this trip one of the most beautiful in North America. Amtrak’s timetable puts the full ride at about 52 hours.

How much does the 52-hour train ride across America cost?

There’s no fixed Chicago-to-Emeryville fare to quote. Search your date on Amtrak and compare the displayed coach, roomette, and bedroom totals. Amtrak’s Sleeper Car Accommodations page says private-room tickets include meals; coach tickets do not.

What is the Amtrak 750-mile rule?

If you’re hoping that a route’s mileage guarantees a sleeper, it doesn’t. Amtrak’s stakeholder FAQ says a 2008 federal law puts routes of 750 miles or more in the federally supported long-distance category. Shorter routes are mainly state-supported. Check the booking options for your train if you want a private room.

What is the Amtrak $499 special?

Don’t build your budget around that phrase. Amtrak advertised a limited-time $250 USA Rail Pass price on January 16, 2026, for 10 coach segments in 30 days. Check Amtrak’s current pass page before making plans around any quoted special.

Does Amtrak offer a senior discount?

Yes. If you’re 65 or older, check Amtrak’s Senior Discount page for 10% off most fares. Its cross-border VIA/Amtrak offer starts at 60. Pacific Surfliner gives riders 62 and older 15% off; enter the eligible discount during booking and check the final price.

Is a USA Rail Pass worth it for seniors?

Compare it if you plan several coach trips within 30 days. Amtrak’s Multi-Ride and Rail Pass page describes 10 segments, and each segment needs a reservation. The pass doesn’t cover a sleeper. Price the journeys you actually want, then compare their total with the current pass price.
